Abstract: The locomotion behavior of juvenile swimming crab Portunus trituberculatus (with body weight of 13. 348 + 1. 751 g in group A, 21.71 + 1. 247 g in group B and 30.308 + 3. 009 g group C) was observed under different water current and variations in oxygen consumption, ammonia -N excretion, ratio of oxygen to nitrogen (O/N) and haemocyanin in the juveniles were studied under 1 h current stimulated (23 cm/s) , recovery 12 h and recovery 24 h in a laboratory. The water current was found to show a significant influence on the locomotion behavior of the juveniles. Under water current of 23 cm/s the juveniles crawled against the current at the bottom of flume tank, while over 23 cm/s the crabs in group A groveled at the block and did not move. The results showed that the oxygen consumption and ammonia - N excretion decreased with increase in body weight of the crab. After stimulation for 1 hour by water current (23 cm/s) , the oxygen consumption, ammonia - N excretion and haemocyanin decreased, while the ratio of O/N elevated. The oxygen consumption, ammonia - N excretion and haemocyanin increased while the O/N decreased 12 hours after recovery. All the parameters under study were returned to the normal level 24 hours after recovery. Compared with the normal crab, the significant effect of water current on the oxygen consump- tion, ammonia - N excretion, and ration of oxygen to nitrogen (O/N) in juvenile crabs was observed (P 〈 0.05 ), indicating that it is important to control the water current for the crab culture.
