Abstract: This paper describes morphological characters and some biological behaviours of lancelet Branchiostoma collected from Maoming, Guangdong province. The lancelet species was identified as Branchiostoma belched Gray, in which the main external morphological characters was no found to have distinct differences from one collected from Xiamen or Beibu Gulf, expect the larger body size. The food items were predominantly silt and oddment in alimentary canal of the lancelets from Maoming, and 53 species of life components were identified. These species consisted of bottom diatoms mostly, some dinoflagellates and bottom copepodas. Mature individuals appeared in each survey months in the whole year, but the peak spawning occurred in spring. The distribution of different sizes of individuals varied with bottom quality and water depth.
