Abstract: It is shrimp trawl fisheries that are facing the most serious bycatch and discard issue in global fisheries. Almost in each important shrimp trawl fishery, multiform and effective selective researches have been conducted to alleviate the outstanding issue. In this paper, researches on size and species selectivity, especially the developments and designs of BRDs (Bycatch Reduction Devices), of North Atlantic Northern shrimp (Pandalus borealis) fisheries and Northeast Atlantic and Mediterranean Nephrops fisheries, in which the earliest and most comprehensive selective researches had been conducted, were reviewed and summarized based on the introduction of the characteristics of bycatch issues of each fishery. Additionally, compulsive technical conservation measures to reduce bycatch constituted by EU and other countries were listed. According to these, the general characteristics of researches on selective trawls in the fisheries was discussed. We considered that the successful experience in development of selective shrimp trawls in the European shrimp fisheries would be the necessary gist for future research and legislation on selective shrimp trawls in Chinese fisheries.
