Abstract: The BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) on the verge of five oceans are rich in natural resources and potential for economic development. In recent years, BRICS countries have carried out joint research projects, conducted joint voyage surveys, established platforms for scientific research cooperation, and continuously expanded the depth and breadth of cooperation for strengthening innovative cooperation in the field of ocean and polar science, and achieve remarkable progress. For a comprehensive understanding of ocean and polar research in the BRICS countries, we have a quantitative analysis of the number and influence of published articles, so as the research focus and international cooperation using the method of literature metrology. The results show that the BRICS countries have their own hotspots and focused disciplines on ocean and polar research. They do not have a close cooperation activities, and prefer to cooperate with main oceanography and polar research powers. In order to fully explore the cooperation among BRICS countries and to combine with the actual needs of maritime research in BRICS countries, relevant suggestions on science and technology cooperation and human resources construction are put forward to provide new impetus for the future economic development in BRICS countries.
