Abstract: Shrimps and crabs grow accompanied by molt, during which age recording of exoskeleton is disappeared, resulting in difficulty in age identification.Since eyestalks are considered as a material for direct age determination of shrimps and crabs, morphological structure, sample preparation and utilization of eyestalks in age determination of shrimps and crabs are reviewed. There are four-layers (epicuticle, exocuticle, endocuticle and membranous layer) in the eyestalks, in which growth bands are calcified in the endocuticle to determine the age.The growth bands are divided into broadband, which is primarily related to age information, and fine lines, which is related to body length and other factors. The relationship between growth bands with age and growth in shrimps and crabs is also needed further analysis and verification. The findings provide an important references with fishery biology and fisheries resources management.
