Abstract: The application of new materials technologies and standards in fishing vessel construction in China is characterized by high energy consumption and low efficiency seriously affecting economic efficiency and urgent requirement for renovation compared with that in developed fishery countries in the world. In this study the appli cation status of structural materials for fishing vessels at home and abroad was summarized and the comprehensive performance of six rountine construction materials for fishing vessels was evaluated in terms of mechanics economy and sustainability. The main problems in fishery development in China are discussed including unreasonable alloca tion of fishing vessel industry slow popularization of advanced fishing equipment and high fishing cost. It is sug gested that polyethylene fishing vessels be actively developed for small-scale fishing vessels along the coast fiber glass reinforced plastic fishing vessels for medium-sized offshore fishing vessels all-steel hulls and aluminium al loy fishing vessles for large-scale offshore fishing vessels with energy-saving high-strength corrosion -resistant and low-cost in future fishing vessel construction materials.
