Abstract: In this paper, object detection and tracking techniques of aquatic animals for smart fisheries and precision cultivation and their application are reviewed comprehensively. Firstly, we summarize the underwater data collection techniques for aquatic animals including acoustics-sensor based data collection, the optical-video-camera based data collection and the data collection techniques based on both of the acoustics and optical. Then, we thoroughly describe the advances in object detection and tracking techniques for aquatic animals from various aspects, including the dataset collection and annotation, data preprocessing, object recognition of the aquatic animals, and object tracking of the aquatic animals. Finally, the application and research status of aquatic animal object detection and tracking technology in marine fishery industry is discussed, and the problems and challenges faced by aquatic animal object detection and tracking technology and applied research are put forward. The future research direction, and construction of accelerating the underwater object detection and tracking data set and open sharing service platform for aquatic animals are suggested, for realizing the key technological breakthroughs of accurate detection and real-time tracking of aquatic animals. The proposals to promote the development of intelligent monitoring equipment based on accurate detection and real-time tracking of aquatic animals are intended to provide reference for accelerating the promotion of precision farming of intelligent fisheries and the modernization of marine fisheries.
