Comparison of plankton community structure and water environment characteristics between Huanren Reservoir and Biliuhe Reservoir

Abstract: The species composition,dominant species, and similarity index (P′) of plankton were comparatively investigated between Huanren Reservoir and Biliuhe Reservoir. Liaoning Province, in April, June, and August 2018 and evaluated by canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) in order to compare the difference in plankton community structure in the two reservoirs. The results showed that 202 species of phytoplankton were found in Huanren Reservoir, with an average density of 0.97×107 ind./L, an average biomass of 12.92 mg/L, an average diversity index of 3.27, and an evenness index of 0.769. A total of 115 phytoplankton species were observed in Biliuhe Reservoir, with a density of 0.72×107 ind./L, biomass of 16.05 mg/L, diversity index of 3.287, and uniformity index of 0.714. Phytoplankton similarity index was 30.99% between the two reservoirs. A total of 107 species of zooplankton were observed in Huanren Reservoir, with density of 526.6 ind./L and biomass of 2.16 mg/L. A total of 60 species of zooplankton were detected in Biliuhe Reservoir, with an average density of 140.9 ind./L and an average biomass of 0.80 mg/L. The similarity index of zooplankton was 35.77% in the two reservoirs. The average content of total nitrogen (TN) was shown to be 1.06 mg/L in Huanren Reservoir and 0.89 mg/L in Biliuhe Reservoir; average content of total phosphorus (TP) 0.09 mg/L in Huanren Reservoir, and 0.08 mg/L in Biliuhe Reservoir. The weighted comprehensive nutrient state index indicated that Huanren Reservoir was within the eutrophication type, and Biliu River in the medium eutrophication type. Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA) revealed that the main environmental factors affecting dominant plankton species were found to be COD, and Chl-a in Biliuhe Reservoir. The findings indicated that the structure of plankton communities is stable and the water environment is good in Huanren Reservoir and Biliuhe Reservoir due to bioremediation engineering. The number and density of plankton species in Huanren Reservoir are higher than those in Biliuhe Reservoir, and the species were more abundant.
